Drive Simulator
I was recently summoned by my company to spend time behind a drive simulator. This multi-featured unit is called the TranSimVS III. I found myself seated behind a three-channel plasma screen which I was told had to be worth at least U.S. $300,000.00 including system peripherals.
The session was controlled by a trainer who sat behind the main computer. I was briefed on the controls which were an exact replica of my work vehicle's interior. I was more than impressed as the look and feel were extremely well-mastered by the software designer. The view was 180 degrees including real time mirror images. Any veering from the path was accompanied by rumbles, shakes, scrapes and bumps. The 70 Hz software delivered optimal visuals couupled with all the stresses of driving which included different weather patterns, hills, careless and inattentive drivers. The trainer actually caused my left steer-tire to blow out and it shook the unit so suddenly that I treated it like a jack-knife.
This session was a pleasant addition to my 4th quarter training. This reminded me of an expensive piece of military [field] equipment. The whole system was placed inside of a trailer which was approximately 9'W x 7'H and maybe 18'L. My hat goes off to the developer(s). Simulation at its' finest.
